What to Know Before You Join

The Ideal Student

These classes are designed for high-school students seeking a deeper intellectual engagement with mathematics. While a high level of rigor is expected, the proofs are built from first principles, making it accessible to those without any outside knowledge.

Dialogue-Based Learning

The teaching method follows a structured dialogue format that was mainly practiced even until the Enlightenment. There are no passive lectures; instead, students participate in a shared Socratic inquiry to uncover the logic and philosophical 'why' behind classical theorems. These classes are not teacher-run, they are student-run and the teacher is merely a guide.

Weekly Commitment

Success requires a consistent time investment outside of class. I recommend setting aside 4-6 hours weekly for the slow, careful reading of primary mathematical texts and the independent reconstruction of proofs and geometric diagrams, along with classes twice a week.

Which Class to Choose

While you can sign up for only a year of classes, these are designed as a single pathway. Since all of mathematics has been built up over time, beginners to these texts should only sign up for Euclid (Year 1) and work their way through the classes over time. Every class builds directly on the last, except Euclid, which is the basis upon which all mathematical thought rests. If you are moving on from Euclid to Year 2, either Astronomy or Conics will serve as your Year 2 requirement; you can choose either one.

What to Buy for Class

All you will need is the book. After you sign up, you will receive an email from me that will tell you exactly which book, and recommended editions/translations. A notebook and a basic geometry set including a straightedge and compass is also suggested but not required.

When the Classes Are

Classes meet twice per week on Mondays and Fridays. Exact times will be determined and communicated to you after registration.

Limited Enrollment

To foster genuine discussion, each class is limited to a small group of students. These finite seats ensure that every participant is an active voice in the discussion, allowing all to pursue the logical depth that classical mathematics requires. Early enrollment is recommended

Classes

Euclid Picture.webp
Euclid (Year 1)

Master the foundations of geometry through a rigorous study of the thirteen books of Euclid’s Elements.

Astronomy (Year 2a)

Uncover the mathematical structure of the heavens through the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems.

Conics (Year 2b)

Explore the sophisticated curves of Apollonius and the transition from static to dynamic geometry.

Calculus (Year 3)

Discover the calculus of fluxions and the beautiful synthesis of infinite series and motion with the original authors.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION & PERSONALIZED CLASSES

Academic Tutoring

Along with classes, I offer individual personal tutoring, either for those struggling to keep up, or for those wishing to dive deeper into the topic than the class offers.

Personal Classes

Personal classes are for those seeking a deeper intellectual engagement with mathematical history, or those wishing to learn at a pace that is not classroom speed. With completely unique lesson plans tailored to your specific curiosity and schedule.

THE TUTORING ADVANTAGE

One-on-One Support

Direct scholarly mentorship to help master the logic and proofs of the great mathematicians.

Tailored Plans

Curricula built around your specific needs, focusing on your areas of interest.

Flexible Schedules

Individual time slots designed to accommodate students with unique schedules and commitments.

Deep Inquiry

A concentrated approach to learning that prioritizes mastery over a rigid multi-year schedule.
